The Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation otherwise known as WAPA was created in 1999 for the purpose of elevating the living standard of the good people of Lagos State with emphasis on all categories of Women through economic empowerment and sustainable programmes that would lead to self-employment and economic self-reliance.
The Executive head of the Ministry is the Honourable Commissioner, Mrs. Joke Orelope-Adefulire while the Permanent Secretary Mrs. Risikat Akiyode is the Administrative head.
The present administration has embarked on various empowerment programmes which led to the introduction of 17 Vocational Skills Centres across the State and courses in areas such as:- Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, Tile laying/ Inter-locking, Aluminum Fabrication, Vulcanizing/ Wheel Balancing and Alignment, Screen/ Transfer Printing Technology, Shoe Making, Photography, Catering and Hotel management, Computer studies, Hairdressing, Barbing, Welding, Fashion Designing, Bead Stringing and Hat Making, Tye and Dye, Texile Design, E.t.c.
The Ministry equally introduced other Poverty reduction initiatives which include micro-credit lending through micro-finance banks, financial and material empowerment of parents with multiple births and those that the are physically challenged.
